In the golden days of October, the 2024 Beijing Security & Protection Expo (CPSE) quietly drew to a close. Though smaller than at its peak, this annual event still carries the sentiment and hopes of security professionals. Like a window, it lets us look back on past industry shifts and glimpse the future. Technically, security front-end devices continue to break through toward ultra-high definition, intelligence, full-color night vision, low power consumption, and integrated functionality; in applications, many vendors keep expanding enterprise-level business, using video-centric digital solutions to empower the digital upgrade of security, production, and operations management across all industries. Looking back, since the 1990s security has evolved from the analog era through the network era and the intelligent era, undergoing collective paradigm shifts. Early intelligence began with video structuring, enabling detection of people and vehicles. As AI integrated into the field, it pushed security into the AI era, letting surveillance see and understand more targets and behaviors. If the earlier industry migration focused on improving the physical performance of devices-the ability to "see"-then in the AI era, by layering AI onto security's inherent perception and IoT attributes, visual-IoT devices go deeper on "understanding". Security systems are moving from basic protection toward safe production, quality monitoring, and environmental supervision across many verticals. Security business, once dominated by government projects, is tilting toward enterprise and commercial markets. Leveraging the generality of their products and technology, security firms keep opening new pan-security scenarios and extending their reach; the combination of security systems with AI or large models becomes the key to unlocking innovative applications.
